⚠ The real question: can we even join?
Gregory Gym is UT's, run by RecSports — but there is a way in for us without being a student. The membership ladder:
- ✅ Community Member program — RecSports offers a Community membership for people not affiliated with UT. This is our path in — no student or alumni tie required. Exact rate, any senior discount, enrollment fee, and exactly what it includes (full facility? pool? classes?) need confirming with RecSports — site was unreachable tonight; queued for a follow-up pull.
- UT students — free (covered by tuition).
- Faculty / staff, UT retirees, and alumni via Texas Exes + spouses — low-cost member categories that may undercut the Community rate — worth comparing.
Confirmed straight from RecSports: memberships are month-to-month with no annual or enrollment fee, ever — cancel anytime. Community members enroll through the RecSports Online Store (choose "not affiliated with UT / Alumni"). Questions: (512) 471-3116, memberships@utrecsports.org, or walk into the membership office at Gregory Gym room 2.200 (Mon–Fri 8am–5pm). Site is utrecsports.org.
Bottom line: we can join as Community Members, no long-term commitment. The one open number is the current Community monthly rate (and any senior discount) — flagged for the research hand-off.
What's inside
Gregory is a big, modernized complex (original 1930 building + a four-story annex):
Swimming
RecSports runs several pools; the live posted hours the day I checked give the picture:
- Outdoor Leisure Pool — 11a–7p (the recreational pool)
- Outdoor Lap Pool — 9a–9p (longest hours; for lap swimming)
- Outdoor Event Pool — 11a–7p
- Natatorium (indoor) — split hours: 6–9a, 12–2p, 5–7p
Pool hours shift daily and seasonally — check the current day at utrecsports.org/hours before you go, and confirm lane rules on the aquatics page.
Programs
- Group fitness classes, personal training, aquatics / swim lessons, masters swimming, instructional programs, and (for students) intramural & club sports. Exact current class lists and fees: verify on the RecSports programs page.
TeXercise — RecSports group fitness
TeXercise is RecSports' own group-fitness program at Gregory (correcting an earlier note — it's a UT RecSports offering, and it's front-and-center on their site right now). Current promo: your first three TeXercise classes are free. You book them through the RecSports site ("Book a TeXercise Class"). Exact class styles/schedule and any pricing beyond the free trial: confirm on the site or by phone.
A little history
Built in 1930 (about $500,000), named for Thomas Watt Gregory, a former U.S. Attorney General and UT alumnus. It closed for a 22-month modernization starting November 1997.
