The short answer: at 480 miles you never hit the extra-mileage charge. A one-way U-Haul
bundles a mileage allowance into its flat price — and for a Hot Springs to Cedar Creek move that allowance
(around 600 miles) already covers the drive. Extra miles are $1.00 each only if you exceed it, and you won't.
So on a one-way rental, the truck size changes the price; the distance does not add anything.

Ranges are wide because one-way pricing floats with demand and direction. Book early and the
low end is realistic; last-minute in a busy week pushes toward the high end.
Where the $1/mile actually bites. Only if the trip runs past the built-in allowance. At a
600-mile cutoff and a 480-mile drive you are 120 miles under — so there is no per-mile charge at any
size. If you detoured or the allowance came in lower than 600, each mile over is $1.00: a 100-mile overage is
$100, a 200-mile overage is $200.
Round trip instead? Then mileage dominates
If you keep the truck and return it to Hot Springs, it becomes an in-town rental: a daily rate plus about
$0.99 for every mile — roughly 960 miles round trip. Now the mileage is the whole cost and the
truck size barely matters.

The lesson: going one direction, rent one-way — the miles are free inside the flat
rate. Coming back with the truck, all four sizes land within $150 of each other because you pay per mile both
ways, so take the size you actually need, not the cheapest daily rate.
What to add to any of these
Fuel — you pay it, and a 26′ box does about 8–10 mpg. At 480 miles
that is roughly 50–60 gallons, $150–180. A 10′ does far better, 12–14 mpg.
Damage waiver — $15–30 a day if you take it.
Environmental fee and taxes — a small percentage on top.
Dolly and pads — a few dollars each if needed.
Reminder from the move plan: if the Hot Springs house is being kept and let furnished, there
is little to haul — the furniture stays as part of the rental. Bring papers, valuables and personal
